I Got It

I have set 3 workout goals to accomplish by May 10th. I must get 1 muscle-up, 3 handstand push-ups (no kip) and a 200# deadlift. Well, today I got my MUSCLE-UP. Since Crossfit Central is closed (kinda) for the week, I called up my buddy Miguel Garza of Crossfit Austin and G7 Athletics for a little one-on-one. He broke down every step, we did a couple drills, put on some Marley and it was on! After about 4 attempts, I was up. It felt amazing, but my sternum doesn't. OUCH! I'm not really sure why, but I don't really care. I got my muscle-up. My new goal for May 10th is 2 in a row.

Here it is....

Thanks Miguel. Next, is a true muscle-up with no kip!

You Got Rick Rolled

For those of you who read my Music Monday blog, you had the pleasure of listening to this old school tune.

I usually give an introduction to my music picks. With this post, I just posted a link to the song for you to discover on your own. Why you ask? Because you got "Rick Rolled!" If you are not familiar with that term, here is the definition:

When what you think is a link to something you want to see actually directs you to a video of Rick Astley singing "Never Gonna Give You Up."

I LOVE this song. I LOVE the video. I LOVE "rick rolling." I think that one of the reasons this song was chosen for this game is because after hearing it, there is a good chance it's going to get stuck in your head. LOVE it!

I thought I would include some memorable "rick roll" moments for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

What a week of NO Crossfit?!

There are no classes this week at Crossfit Central. WTF? What is a girl to do? Well, actually they have a great reason...Spring Cleanse!

"One of the great things about the CrossFit Central community is that everyone that trains here pushes themselves as hard as they can possibly go. That being said, CrossFit can be tough on the body and, often enough, a one week break is needed. We call it Spring Cleaning! We've organized a week of free instruction by Austin's best practitioners that focus on: restoration, rejuvenation, elongation of the muscles, core strengthening, nutrition, and Trigger Point Therapy. These sessons will help you to refocus your nutritional needs while preparing your body to make the most of your training at CrossFit Central."

As much as I probably need some of those classes, I still NEED my daily dose of ass kicking. I am very capable of working out on my own. However, as a trainer, sometimes it is nice to go into a workout and not have to worry about what I'm going to do. Like my clients I also like to be pushed and motivated, and I can only do so much for myself. I'm also very competitive, so when I am in a group class, I work so much harder than I would if I were alone. The intensity at Crossfit Central is contagious!!!!!!!

So, I put my skills to the test. Here is was today's WOD:

1/2 mile run
25 kipping pull-ups
25 push-ups
50 lunges (down hill)
sprint up hill back to pull-up station

25 chest to bar pull-ups
25 push-ups
50 lunges (down hill)
sprint up hill back to pull-up station

25 toes to bar
25 box jumps
100 lunges (down hill)- decided on extra set for good measure
sprint up hill back to pull-up station

10 dead hang pull-ups
1/2 mile run

This was not my original workout. I had planned to do a kettlebell, sandbell, pull-up, sprint workout at Austin High, but school was in session, and I was S.O.L. I stumbled across this little area on Town Lake, across from Zachary Theatre, and improvised a great little workout. Feel free to give it a try.

Thank You Earth

On this Earth Day, I would like to give a special thanks to Mother Earth for providing the greatest thing in the world...COFFEE!!!!!!! I freakin' love coffee. I truly believe that it is all I need to survive. I could drink it all day long, and some days I do.

Here are my top 5 favorite places to get a cup of Joe:

5. Scooters- They always have a fun "Flavor of the Day," like scooterlicious.

4. 7-Eleven- The best when it comes to convenient store coffee!

3. Thunderbird Coffee- I had their coffee for the first time this month, and I am hooked!

2. Austin Java- Mexican blend (go figure, haha) and Fog cutter are my favorites.

1. Dunkin Donuts- If only there were more in Austin. :(

If it wasn't for Mother Earth, I would not get to indulge in my favorite beverage. THANKS.

What's your favorite coffee?????

Peace Out,

Jess

Music Monday

This week's pick is "Stand Up"by the Flobots. They are a rock/hip hop/rap group that sings about real sh!t. The band has developed an organization that uses music to help make a positive change in the world. We need more of this!

"Each of us has the power to make a positive contribution to the world. Music gives is a soundtrack. Music inspires us to pump our fists and move our feet. Education and tools lead us to action." - Flobots.org

Stand up
We shall not be moved
Except By a child with no socks and shoes
If you've got more to give then you've got to prove
Put your hands up and I'll copy you
Stand up We shall not be moved
Except by a woman dying from a loss of food
If you've got more to give then you've got to prove
Put your hands up and I'll copy you

We still don't understand thunder and lightning
Flash back to when we didn't fund the dam
Didn't fund the dam levee? No wonder man
Now our whole damn city's torn asunder man
Under water but we still don't understand
We see hurricane spills overrun the land
Through gaps you couldn't fill with a 100 tons of sand
No we still don't understand
We've seen planes in the windows of buildings crumbled in
We've seen flames send the chills through London
And we've sent planes to kill them and some of them were children
But still we crumbling the building
Underfunded but we still don't understand
Under God but we kill like the son of Sam
But if you feel like I feel like about the son of man
We will overcome

So Stand up
We shall not be moved
Except By a child with no socks and shoes
If you've got more to give then you've got to prove
Put your hands up and I'll copy you
Stand up We shall not be moved
Except by a woman dying from a loss of food
If you've got more to give then you've got to prove
Put your hands up and I'll copy you

I said Put your hands up and I'll copy you
Put your hands up and I'll copy you
If you've got more to give then you've got to prove
Put your hands up and I'll copy you

We shall not be moved
Except By a child with no socks and shoes
Except by a woman dying from a loss of food
Except by a freedom fighter bleeding on a cross for you
We shall not be moved
Except by a system thats rotten through
Neglecting the victims and ordering the cops to shoot
High treason now we need to prosecute

So Stand up
We shall not be moved
And we won't fight a war for fossil fuel
Its times like this that you want to plot a coup
Put your hands up and I'll copy you
So Stand up
We shall not be moved
Unless were taking a route we have not pursued
So if you've got a dream and a lot to do
Put your hands up and I'll copy you

I said Put your hands up and I'll copy you
Put your hands up and I'll copy you
if you've got a dream and a lot to do
Put your hands up

Now shake, shake
A Polaroid dream
nightmare negatives develop on the screen
We sit back and wait for the government team
Criticize they but who the fuck are we
The people want peace but the leaders want war
Our neighbors don't speak, peek through the front door
House representatives preach "stay the course"
Time for a leap of faith
Once More

Put your hands up high if you haven't abandoned
Hope that the pen strokes stronger than the cannon
Balls to the wall, Nose to the grindstone
My interrogation techniques leave your mind blown
So Place your bets lets speak to the enemy
Don't let em pretend that we seek blood
And who's we anyways Kemo Sabe?
Mighty warlord wanna-be street thug
a threat for a threat leaves the whole world terrified
blow for blow never settles the score
word for word is time need clarify
We the people did not want war

So Stand up
We shall not be moved
Except By a child with no socks and shoes
If you've got more to give then you've got to prove
Put your hands up and I'll copy you
Stand up
We shall not be moved
Unless were taking a route we have not pursued
So if you've got a dream and a lot to do
Put your hands up and I'll copy you

I said Put your hands up and I'll copy you
Put your hands up and I'll copy you
if you've got a dream and a lot to do
Put your hands up

Weekend with my Bestie!

I would like to give a shout out to my great weekend. There was LOTS of laughter and celebration, LOTS of ass kicking workouts and best of all I got to spend LOTS of time with my bestie, Melisa Ann. Since opening her Anytime Fitness Gym in Fredericksburg, I haven't seen much of her lately. Which is pretty sad considering we live in the same city about 15 min away (with no traffic).

Here we are at the Chelsea Handler book signing.
Later that night a group of us went to dinner for CP's birthday followed by Chelsea Handler's stand-up show. It was a blast!

Saturday I went to cheer Melisa and Karen on at the Crossfit Central affiliate team tryouts.

Then they came and cheered me on at the CATZ R.O.A.R Challenge.

I was beat after that workout, so I spent the rest of my afternoon lounging and napping. That evening I went to see The Runaways with CP and Christina. It was a pretty good little movie! I topped off my weekend with a great service at Lake Hills Church with Melisa and Rick and another birthday dinner with CP and her family.

I am now ready to take on the week and prepare for another amazing weekend!

Peace Out,

Some Chelsea Humor

I'm sorry if you are a Jessica Simpson fan, but I had to post this from Chelsea Handler's blog. It was too funny to pass up. FYI, she (Chelsea) will be performing Friday and Saturday in Austin and doing a book signing Friday at Book People. You better believe Melisa and I will be there eager and ready with books in hand.

'DO-OVER

Jessica SimpsonJeffrey Ufberg/Getty Images

Jessica Simpson reportedly asked her best friend/hairdresser Ken Paves to give her a new hair-do. According to Star Magazine, Simpson is unhappy with her recent weight gain and asked Paves to give her a 'do that will "disguise the weight." What…a game plan.

Most people would consider less chili and more cardio, but to each her own. Pave's response to the request was to give her "long layers that hang into her face." That also doesn't sound like the smartest choice, since if something is hanging in her face she's most likely going to eat it.

Music Monday

This week's pick is by Angus and Julia Stone. They are an amazing brother-sister band from Australia. They both have beautifully, unique voices. I'm posting two songs. The first is "Just a Boy" in which Angus is the featured singer. The second, "And the Boys," is sung by Julia. I also felt like I should do two to make-up for missing last week.

Take it all in and Enjoy!

Gone too Long

I'm back. I took a little time off from blogging. It was not intentional but more accidental. Last weekend I went to a wedding in California. CP and I decided to stay a couple of extra days and make a vacation out of it. I'd have to say it was one of the best vacations I've ever had. I got to sleep in till 7:30 (that's late for me). I didn't have to worry about being anywhere at a specific time. The day was a blank slate, and we just filled it in as we went along. I loved not having to live by a schedule for a few days.

I enjoyed some amazing runs on the beach.

(Del Mar, California)

I had some of the best breakfasts (my favorite meal of the day) of my life...they were fairly healthy too.

(Marie and I at Americana)

I got to do a little surfing.

Enjoyed a little shopping. Which is one of my favorite past times.

(Dani and I walking the streets of Del Mar)

We even made to the Birch Aquarium in San Diego.

(CP and I outside the Shark area)

I also experienced my first earthquake. We were standing on a pier in Pacific Beach. The entire thing was rocking back and forth. We had no idea what was going on. I thought this was normal since no one else seemed to be to worried. We didn't know it was an earthquake until we went into a nearby shop.

(This was the Pier we were standing on when it hit)

Now I am back in full force and ready to get back on a schedule. I can't wait to go back. Maybe even one day move there...that's how much I loved it.

Peace Out,

Jess
