Conversations with God

For the past 3 months I have been attempting to read Conversations with God. I would read about 4 or 5 pages, then wouldn't pick it up again for 3 weeks, read 4 or 5 pages, pick it up again 3 weeks later and so on and so on. Needless to say, I have not gotten very far in the book. So, I am re-commiting myself to the book....I WILL READ 10 PAGES EVERYDAY!

Every week, I will share with you what i've learned/read that week. Kind of like a weekly book report, if you will. This will no only hold me accountable for reading my 10 pages a day but maybe even you'll even get something out of it.

I do not consider myself a religious person. I have nothing against religion. I grew up Catholic and still love a good traditional mass, but it's not the path I choose for myself. (Sorry Mom, I know you are reading this and probably wincing. I LOVE YOU) I will say that I am a Spiritual person, and I do believe in God. From what i've read thus far, the book is right in-line with how I view God and my world.

Jeremy has asked all of the coaches of CrossFit Central to come up with a motto for 2012. A phrase that sparks Initiative, Ambition, and Hunger. After lots of back and forth between several options, I decided this one fits best for what I am trying to accomplish in 2012:

"When there is nothing left to burn, YOU have to set yourself on FIRE!"

The quote is the opening to a song from one of my favorite bands, STARS. As far as I am concerned (did the research), the quote was made up by the lead singer, Torquil Campbell.

The quote takes on several different meaning for me, and I will do my best to explain them. I sometimes find it difficult to translate the semi-organized chaos that is constantly running through my head.

A fire has been lit inside of me, and I am ready to blow-up. I want to take it to that next level, as a coach, an athlete and a person. I am here to take a stand for myself, my athletes and my team.

Myself: I used to be the kind of person that would just sit back and wait for things to happen or come to me. If something seemed too difficult or out of reach, I'd would let it go and dismiss it. Never again. To be that person is such a waste of freakin' space. If I want something, I am going to fight like hell to get it. I will put in the time, energy, blood sweat and tears to create the life I've always wanted.

My Athletes: It will be my mission to see that my athletes (clients) are living the life that they've always wanted. I am their #1 Fan, and I will make sure they know it EVERY time they step foot in the gym.

My Team: I am honored and fortunate to be surrounded by the best coaches CrossFit has to offer. They are not just co-workers to me. They are family. As a team, we will continue to set the standards. FIGHT!

Today would mark my Dad's 71st birthday....gosh that seems so old. In 2006, my dad passed away after a long battle with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.

His birthday always falls around Thanksgiving which to me seems fitting. Since he has passed away, I have never really been angry or asked "why me" or "what did my family do to deserve this." Instead, I took a different approach. I am just incredibly THANKFUL that he was in my life, even it was for a short time. Being bitter and angry isn't going to bring him back; therefore; I choose to cherish the great times I had with him. He still very much alive inside of me.

If it weren't for my dad, I probably wouldn't have a lick of common sense. He taught me how to be independent and self sufficient. Most importantly, he taught me how to fight. Not the "Rocky", Kung-Fu, meet me outside and let's duke it out kind of fight, but to really fight...fight for your life and the things you care about.

It was not a short fight by any means...4 years to be exact. He relapsed 3 times and each time the doctors said it would be the last. Each relapse brought on a new set of complications, but he overcame them and went into remission. It wasn't over till he said it was gonna be over. My Dad told me that he was waiting for me to graduate from college. He wanted to be there in person to me see receive my diploma....no pressure there, right. :) I graduated from Texas State in December of 2005. He passed in January of 2006.

No one has ever fought that hard for me. I owe it to him to fight hard for my life and whatever I want out of it. There is no battle too big. If I fight hard enough, I will win! He will always be the voice in my head telling me 1 more rep, pick up the bar, and move! I am truly blessed and THANKFUL to have had 24 AMAZING years with him.

What It Means To Be A CrossFit Central Coach

Before I started coaching for CrossFit Central, I was only doing in-home personal trainer. I had a pretty cush' lifestyle. I would train a few clients in the morning, come home watch TV or play on the internet, go workout, come home nap or watch more TV, then train a few more clients and usually home by 6:30 or 7. I had clients that traveled quite a bit or really hectic work schedule which allowed for even more free time to waste. It was great. I loved it. No complaints.

A few months ago I decided that I wanted to start coaching CrossFit. I met/interviewed with Jeremy, Lisa and Carey and got the go ahead to start my mentorship. It didn't take long for me to realize that this is exactly where I wanted to be. I took all the necessary steps in the mentorship program to ensure that I would make a successful coach. It also lead to a complete lifestyle change. I no longer had the relaxing down time that I had once had. Any downtime I had was spent at Central shadowing classes, coaches and elements. If I wasn't at the gym, I was home doing the required assignments to complete my mentorship in a timely manner. There were no more naps and very little TV time. In fact 90% of the time, the TV is just background noise. I have about 3 months worth of General Hospital on my DVR right now that probably won't get watched....that's how much I LOVE my job. Being a CrossFit Central coach is not just showing up for classes and meetings. There is a lot of behind the scenes work that demands a lot of our free time. I have not once dreaded any part of the process because it's all the little things add up that make us GREAT!

As many of you may know, the coaches at CrossFit Central are NEXT LEVEL coaches. You will not find such a dynamic group of badasses at any other CrossFit gym...i'd bet money. I quickly learned that if I wanted a spot here, I was going to have to step up my game BIG TIME. This is the big leagues and here your "A Game" is not good enough. You better bring your A+++ game to keep up with this crew. So, that's where I am right now. I am doing everything possible to earn my spot and make a name for myself. I have a lot to learn, and I have the BEST coaching/ teaching team in the world. Not to mention the most amazing clients in the world. They are the most important key to great coaching because without them...we have nothing.

Shoutout to Zacky Pants

I would like to dedicate this blog post to the man who not only puts up with my shiz-nit on a regular basis, but is responsible for making me "Crazy Strong"...the one and only, Zacky Pants aka Zach Thiel.

I started Zach's olympic weight lifting class in May when I realized that in order for me to get stronger, I needed to work on technique. For those who may not know, the Olympic Lifts consist of the Snatch and Clean & Jerk (click on the lifts for a video demo). They are the most difficult and technical lifts in CrossFit (in my opinion), as well as the most fun.

Before joining oly lifting, my Clean and Jerk was non-existent. I had never performed the lift before, and my clean (the first part of the lift without the jerk overhead) was barley 125#. My Clean and Jerk max is now 145# (about 125% of my bodyweight). The snatch on the other hand was a lift that I was familiar with, but struggled with. Before 2011 South Central Regionals in June, my max was 95#. Last Wednesday, I crushed that with 110# PR (personal record) and in that same week on Friday I PR'd again with 120#.

So, Thank You Zack for being patient and believing in me. I have a long way to go to get where I want to be but it's only UP from here! You have helped me see my true potential in an area of CrossFit that I thought would be my weakness. I will no longer use my size as an excuse or a disadvantage when it comes to lifting heavy shit or competing.

Now let's go crush some Oly Lifting Competitions!

I heard about this video at dinner last night, and I had to check it out (thanks Veronica and Maggie). After watching it, I had mixed emotions. I'll let you see why I thought this was funny yet sad.

I couldn't help but laugh. I mean it's pretty funny, but at the same time it made me sad for the pup. Can you imagine passing out every time you got excited. Cats ARE scary

I've never been a huge fan of cats. They are stuck-up and often act like their shit doesn't stink (not all, but most). However, I did own a cat for a short period of time.

Her name was FeeBee, and she was horrible. (Melisa and Amanda can attest to this)

I found her on a bike ride when she was a teenie tiny kitty. She was so small that I stuck her in the saddle pack of my bike...maybe that's why she was so angry.

You couldn't pet her more than a few seconds before she would go ape shit on your hand. She'd randomly attack your ankles/feet for no reason. And you could forget about having any privacy in the restroom. She liked to sit on the back of the toilet seat while you were on it, watch you in the shower and lick your toothbrush.

I've always said that if you died in the presence of a cat, it would eat you. That's how evil they are. So, you may be wondering where I am going with this blog. Well, a few days ago one of my favorite bloggers, Hyperbole and Half, posted the following video.

This week's pick may not be a big surprise for most of you. It's only fitting that a True Gangsta like myself would be a huge DMX fan. I like to refer to myself as an "OG" (original gangster). Just because I love Ingrid Michaelson and Joshua Radin doesn't mean I don't hold a very special place in my heart for Mr. Earl Simmons aka DMX. Not only does he have some good beats, but he has some good lines/lyrics which I like to refer to as DMX-isms.

My Favorite: "I know how to get down/ know how to bite/ bark very little but I know how to fight." That's how I live my life, so remember that next time you run into me in a dark alley somewhere.

As I was reading the article, 6 Slacker Behaviors That Science Says Are Good For You, on cracked.com. I didn't find any of them to be relatable to me, until I got to #1 and #2. WOW! These two hit close to home...like smack dab on my front porch (if I had a front porch).

#2. Wasting Your Life on the Internet May Stave Off Dementia

It only seems logical that spending hours upon hours surfing the abyss of the Internet will eventually destroy your brain. Five minutes of reading YouTube comments alone should probably wipe out your capacity to do long division without a calculator.

The logic behind this assumption seems sound; it's like when you watch trashy television, right? Your brain is less engaged than if you were, say, reading a book or doing a crossword puzzle. And because you're not exercising your brain muscles, they must be atrophying.

Actually, no. Because some science guys are beginning to find out that those hours of surfing the interwebs might actually be making us smarter.

I spend a lot of time surfing the web. My brain is over flowing with useless information. However, none if it has helped much in the trivia game of Qrank (i'll explain more save in a later blog). I guess this kind of makes me a genius...according to this article. Not only am I brilliant, but I will be a fully functioning 100 year old lady.

#1. Spoiling Yourself Can Fight Stress

Considering all the negative effects of stress, from erectile dysfunction to heart disease, it's no wonder stress.org calls it America's number one problem. It definitely sounds like we're not stressing out as much as we should about this whole stress issue.

Nothing on this list will reduce stress more efficiently than enjoying all those dirty pleasures everyone says you shouldn't enjoy. An Australian study discovered that skipping work or buying that solid gold ice cream scooper is exactly the kind of irresponsible behavior that keeps you stress-free, happy and healthy. Almost everyone engages in this behavior and it seems to be the best way to release steam.

As most of my friends and family know, I like...no make that LOVE...to buy things. Which explains the minimal amount of stress that I have in my life. I'm not saying I don't stress because I definitely do. My stress is just more come and go. Like, every quarter when I have to pay taxes or during the summer/holidays when most of my clients are traveling leaving me with a sad and lonely bank account. Maybe, my lack of stress is due to my love of shopping. On that note, Nordstroms is having their big anniversary sale. See y'all there tomorrow!

Gymnast to Crossfitter

The more I get into crossfit, the more I realize how much I miss gymnastics. If I knew that my body would hold up, I'd hop in a class right now. However, there is a reason that for most of us our gymnastics career ends at 18. If you're lucky, maybe 22. Crossfit allows me to tap into some of those skills. As the sport of Crossfit grows, it provides me with a forum to compete at a higher level. 2011 Games here I come!

I tried the running thing and the triathlon thing and even duathlons. I even considered indoor soccer, flag football and even softball. I just wanted to compete. My search is over. This is it! I'm taking it back to 1988 with this week's Music Monday. I was a measly 6 year old with an impeccable taste in music. I loved this song and the video. There may even be a cassette tape of me singing this very song in a landfill somewhere. If you didn't pick up on this by now (based on previous music blogs), it was obvious there was no parental control on our TV. I definitely watched my fair share of MTV. Yes, I did watch MTV at the age of 6....maybe even younger.

As I watching Last Comic Standing las night, two of the comedians reminded me of Stuart from Mad TV. People are Good

I am a big, believer in paying it forward. I like to tip well for good service. I even tip for coffee when all they do is hand me a cup. I give homeless people money. I like to think that it's going towards something worthy like food or family. I try and make it a point to always let cars over when they are trying to enter my lane. I hold doors open, even if I have to wait 5 seconds for them to get to the door. I donate to charity. It's never very much, but I figure every little bit counts. If I see a person in need and I am in a position to help, I will.

Well after my day yesterday, I owe lots of pay it forwards. Here is what happend.

First thing in the morning, I get an email from a lady saying she found my drivers license at Town Lake. I didn't even realize I had lost my license. I must have dropped when I went kayaking with Monty. I was in awe that she took the time to find out my email address. I'm not in the phonebook, nor is my website up yet and you can't access my email via facebook/twitter. As creepy as it is that someone can be found so easily, I'm still very appreciative. I later found ou that she drove to the address that was on my license to try and give it to me, but I don't live there anymore. Thank goodness cause that would have really freaked me out. However, she was incredibly nice. For that, I am very thankful. I owe you one nice lady! You may not get it directly, but a pay it forward will be done in your honor.

I received a second good deed that same day. However, it was one I could have done without. I'm driving along I-35, when all of sudden the ride got a little bumpy, and I hear "clunk, clunk, clunk." I had a flat tire. $#!* @#$$ ^&*( I'm in the left hand lane, so I pull over into the itty bitty shoulder. I am trying not to freak out as cars swerve and fly past me. I nearly caused a few wrecks that afternoon. What a nightmare that would have been. I would've had to tweet/facebook my own traffic report. So, I decided to call 911 because I realize I am road hazard. After just a few minutes, i'm escorted off the interstate by 3 bike cops. I'm not gonna like, in that moment I kind of felt like a "big deal." That didn't last long cause I still had a flat tire. Anyway, they changed my tire for me without complaint or hesitation. And I know it's kind of in their job description, but they could have been real a-holes about it. They were AWESOME. They were very friendly and made light of the situation. I was so THANKFUL. It would have taken me at least 3 hours to change it, and 2 and half of those hours would have been trying to loosen the bolt thingys.

Thanks Austin Police Department! I will pay it forward by being a careful, courteous driver. By this I mean, I won't flip anyone off when they drive like crap. :)

30 Day Paleo Challenge

Today is the start of the Master Mind Fight Club 30 Day Paleo Challenge. It will be 30 days of meats, nuts, berries, seeds, veggies and fruits. NO starches, sugars, dairy, lentils or artificial sweeteners. However, I am allowing myself 1 cheat a week...not "cheat meal." This means if I go to a mexican restaurant, I can't have chips & salsa, a margarita and enchiladas. I get one of the three as my cheat, and the rest of my dinner has to be paleo. This goes for desserts as well. If I want a dessert, I have to eat a paleo meal prior...I don't get both. If I don't have any hankerings to cheat, then I won't. I would love to make it the full 30 days cheat free. We'll see! It's time to focus and get back on track with food. FOOD IS FUEL, NOT FUN!

Sweet Gestures

I just witnessed one of the sweetest sentiments from my window. I'm about to sit down on the couch when I see "Trent." That is not really his name. I call him that because I don't know his name, and he looks like Trent from the old TV show Daria (great show btw).

Anyway, back to the story. There's a hair salon, Kemestry (which is also great), on the first floor of my building. It is also where "Trent" cuts hair. So, there's a little back story as to why this random guy on the street has a nickname.

Now for the mushy gushy part and point to my blog. "Trent" is just standing outside of his car which is not what got my attention, it was his huge ass grin and his body language that made me stop and look. At this point, I had to see why this grown man was so giddy. A woman comes walking across the street carrying 1/2 dozen roses, hands them to him and gives him a nice, big wet one. They stood there for about 5 min talking and he had the biggest smile on his face. I was a good 150 meters away and on the second floor, and I was able to see how freakin' happy he was. I love that!

You may be thinking big deal some random guy nicknamed "Trent" is happy. Here's the best part. I LOVE the fact that SHE brought HIM flowers. That is not something you see everyday, nor is that something most guys would be into. I could be totally wrong about that, so correct me if I'm wrong.

When they finished their happy moment, I saw them drive off in their matching honda fit cars...GAG ME! :)

CATZ VS. CROSSFIT

I've been wanting to write this blog for a VERY long time, but didn't know how to go about it....or get my point across. Now, with the help of CP (if you need a good analogy, she's your girl), I've got it all figured out.

As some of you may know, I'm a CATZ (Competitive Athlete Training Zone) athlete and a Crossfitter. The main focus of CATZ is sport performance, speed, power, and agility. A basic definition of Crossfit is, "a strength and conditioning fitness methodology that promotes broad and general overall physical fitness (weightlifting, sprinting and gymnastics)."

I have been a member of CATZ Austin for about 3 years and Crossfit Central for about 3 months (prior to crossfit I was just doing kettlebell). Some may ask why both? I say because I consider myself to be a dynamic athlete. CATZ is my weakness. Crossfit is my strength in comparison to CATZ .

Before starting CATZ my body hated moving laterally (side to side), my feet were not quick and I was not agile. Now, I can rock a speed ladder. My feet are quicker. I've got some pretty decent "ups" for a short girl. I'm 10x more powerful than I was 3 years ago. I am totally out of my comfort zone, which is why I will never give it up. I will only become a better athlete if I stay outside my comfort zone.

I came into Crossfit with a gymnastics background, so certain elements are easier for me. I am very comfortable and confident when it comes to pull-ups, handstand push-ups, muscle-ups, ring dips and box jumps. I can execute them, but I've still got a long way...very long way to go before perfecting them. The other side of Crossfit is power lifting, which I find NO comfort in doing. Therefore, I see myself as a long time crossfitter....like forever. I've only been doing crossfit for a short time and have already seen some tremendous strength gains. Not to mention a whole new outlook on food, which will forever be a part of my life.

The next question I get is, "but aren't they competitors." My answer, "yes and no." Here is where CP's great analogy comes in that ties it all together.

CATZ and Crossfit are competitors in the sense that they are like vehicles. They are necessity for everyone. Vehicles provide transportation. CATZ and Crossfit both provide health and fitness. CATZ is like a Porsche. It is built for speed and performance; whereas, Crossfit is like a Range Rover. It can haul heavy things and is able to take on more rugged, extreme terrains. However, both are high quality luxury vehicles.

I am both! Would that be considered a crossover? Anyway, I can haul heavy things, over a rugged terrain, very quickly. Can you?

This is my new, pump me up, going to kickass in the gym song. The lead singer also happens to be the most beautiful man in the world...in my opinion. (Melisa, remember when we met him at Emo's, while listening to Saves The Day. Ahhh, our good ole' punk days. haha)

The band is 30 Seconds to Mars (lead singer is Jared Leto btw) and the song is "This Is War." My favorite part of the song is when the crowd is chanting, Fight, Fight, Fight....,because that is exactly what I hear when I'm trying to get through a workout that is kicking my ass. I will not let it beat me. I will fight till the end and leave nothing on floor.

This week's pick is a special request from Miguel Garza. He is getting ready for the 2010 Crossfit South Central Regional Competition and has chosen a theme song for the next 2 weeks leading up to regionals.

I'm not a big fan of rap music. I only have 3 rappers/rap groups that I can say I really enjoy. If you must know, they are DMX, Beastie Boys and Run DMC. I don't know if the last two even count as rap, but I say it is....so it is. However, I do enjoy a little Eminem every once in a while and the song that Miguel has chosen is pretty good. I can bob my head to it and it makes me want to throw-up some gang signs, so it works. It passes the test for a spot on Music Monday!

Here is an amazing story of not giving up. The article from People Magazine was a little too long. I try and keep my blogs short, sweet and to the point. I took what I thought was important in really grasping the point of this blog and the video.

"In all the years of televised sport, with each thrill of victory balanced by the equally celebrated agony of defeat, no ordeal has been more painfully graphic than the suffering of Julie Moss at Kona, Hawaii. The event was the Ironman Triathlon World Championship, in which entrants of both sexes swim 2.4 miles through the rolling Pacific, bicycle 112 miles, then run a full 26.2-mile marathon—all within 12 hours. At 23, Moss, an unheralded amateur athlete who had never competed in a triathlon before, was leading by several minutes over her nearest female competitor last February with just 440 yards of the marathon to go. Then she fell. It took her three minutes to struggle to her feet and wobble to within 100 yards of the finish, where she collapsed again. Desperately, Julie rose, lurched to within 50 feet, and fell once more. She was still crawling when college student Kathleen McCartney, 23, raced past to victory.

This week's pick is from one of my FAVORITE bands of all time, STARS. They are from Canada and make amazing music. The song "Fixed" is the first single off their new album, The Five Ghosts (June 22nd release date).

I love this song for two reasons 1. because it has a little 80's beat to it and 2. it starts off strong...kinda my style. I hope you all love it as much as I do; and if you do, you should check out some of their other songs. They are brilliant I tell you, just brilliant.

I Got It

I have set 3 workout goals to accomplish by May 10th. I must get 1 muscle-up, 3 handstand push-ups (no kip) and a 200# deadlift. Well, today I got my MUSCLE-UP. Since Crossfit Central is closed (kinda) for the week, I called up my buddy Miguel Garza of Crossfit Austin and G7 Athletics for a little one-on-one. He broke down every step, we did a couple drills, put on some Marley and it was on! After about 4 attempts, I was up. It felt amazing, but my sternum doesn't. OUCH! I'm not really sure why, but I don't really care. I got my muscle-up. My new goal for May 10th is 2 in a row.

You Got Rick Rolled

For those of you who read my Music Monday blog, you had the pleasure of listening to this old school tune.

I usually give an introduction to my music picks. With this post, I just posted a link to the song for you to discover on your own. Why you ask? Because you got "Rick Rolled!" If you are not familiar with that term, here is the definition:

When what you think is a link to something you want to see actually directs you to a video of Rick Astley singing "Never Gonna Give You Up."

I LOVE this song. I LOVE the video. I LOVE "rick rolling." I think that one of the reasons this song was chosen for this game is because after hearing it, there is a good chance it's going to get stuck in your head. LOVE it!

What a week of NO Crossfit?!

There are no classes this week at Crossfit Central. WTF? What is a girl to do? Well, actually they have a great reason...Spring Cleanse!

"One of the great things about the CrossFit Central community is that everyone that trains here pushes themselves as hard as they can possibly go. That being said, CrossFit can be tough on the body and, often enough, a one week break is needed. We call it Spring Cleaning! We've organized a week of free instruction by Austin's best practitioners that focus on: restoration, rejuvenation, elongation of the muscles, core strengthening, nutrition, and Trigger Point Therapy. These sessons will help you to refocus your nutritional needs while preparing your body to make the most of your training at CrossFit Central."

As much as I probably need some of those classes, I still NEED my daily dose of ass kicking. I am very capable of working out on my own. However, as a trainer, sometimes it is nice to go into a workout and not have to worry about what I'm going to do. Like my clients I also like to be pushed and motivated, and I can only do so much for myself. I'm also very competitive, so when I am in a group class, I work so much harder than I would if I were alone. The intensity at Crossfit Central is contagious!!!!!!!

So, I put my skills to the test. Here is was today's WOD:

1/2 mile run

25 kipping pull-ups

25 push-ups

50 lunges (down hill)

sprint up hill back to pull-up station

25 chest to bar pull-ups

25 push-ups

50 lunges (down hill)

sprint up hill back to pull-up station

25 toes to bar

25 box jumps

100 lunges (down hill)- decided on extra set for good measure

sprint up hill back to pull-up station

10 dead hang pull-ups

1/2 mile run

This was not my original workout. I had planned to do a kettlebell, sandbell, pull-up, sprint workout at Austin High, but school was in session, and I was S.O.L. I stumbled across this little area on Town Lake, across from Zachary Theatre, and improvised a great little workout. Feel free to give it a try.
